Serengeti National Park — UNESCO World Heritage

Endless Plains, Big Cats & the Great Migration

The Serengeti is 14,700 km² of savannah, kopjes and river systems—home to vast resident wildlife and the annual movement of ~2 million wildebeest & zebra. With Afro-Views Tours & Safaris, we time sightings to seasons, base you close to the action, and keep transfers efficient so you spend more time with wildlife and less time on roads.

Habitats, Travel Rhythm & Park Basics

How the Serengeti Works

Savannah, river lines and kopjes split the park into zones with different “personalities.” We use this to decide where you sleep and how you move.

Habitats & Predators

Short-grass plains (south) = calving & cheetah; riverine west = Grumeti crocs; north = Mara River crossings & mixed terrain; central = big cat hub with year-round residents.

Rules & Reality

No off-road driving in the park; speeds and viewing distances are enforced. Crossings are never guaranteed. We value patience and positioning over chasing radio call-outs.

Travel Rhythm

Early starts for soft light; mid-day siesta; golden-hour returns. Two-night bases minimize packing and maximize “wildlife time.”

Logistics & Access

Road distances are long; some tracks slow in rains. We use smart camp placement and—when it truly saves time—optional small flights.

Great Migration — Patterns, Not Promises

Time Your Trip Right

Herds move with rain and grass. These windows are reliable guides, never guarantees.

Dec–Mar • South/Ndutu (NCA)

Short-grass plains & calving (late Jan–Mar). Superb cheetah & hyena action; storms possible; off-road permitted in Ndutu (within rules).

Apr–May • Central/West

Long rains; lush scenes; fewer vehicles; sticky black-cotton soils. Resident cats in central; herds trend west.

Jun • Western Corridor

Grumeti River obstacles & croc drama as weather improves. Book early; distances are real.

Jul–Oct • North/Mara River

Peak season; famous crossings (not daily). Blue skies, dust, premium rates, limited beds near Kogatende/Lamai.

Nov • Back South

Short rains; herds trend south via central. Flexible routing wins.

Straight Talk: Crossings are unpredictable and can be brief or crowded. We prioritize good angles, patience and avoiding the worst crunch points.
Where to Base (and Why)

South, Central, West or North?

We match region, camp style and budget to your dates and priorities.

South (Ndutu/NCA) • Dec–Mar

  • Short-grass plains, calving drama, cheetah
  • Off-road permitted in parts of Ndutu (rules apply)
  • Mobile camps shine; storms possible

Central (Seronera) • Year-Round

  • Resident cats, varied habitats, airstrip access
  • Good “first-timer” base; can be busy—smart routing helps
  • Lodges & tented camps across budgets

West (Grumeti) • May–Jun

  • Grumeti River crocs & woodland edges
  • Longer transfers; fewer vehicles than central
  • Great for shoulder-season value

North (Kogatende/Lamai) • Jul–Oct

  • Mara River crossings, mixed terrain, big scenes
  • Peak demand; book early for camps near sites
  • Balloon flights offer superb aerials (age limits apply)
How You Can Do It

Pick a Style—We Handle the Rest

Private vehicles for control and photography, group options for value, and smart add-ons.

Private Vehicle & Guide

Your pace, your sightings. Custom routes by season; lodges or mobile camps; balloon option.

Budget Group Safaris

Set departures with shared vehicle/camps. Less flexible but best price-point—great for solo travelers.

Add-Ons

Dawn balloon + bush breakfast (weather & age limits), Ndutu green-season off-road (NCA), and beach wind-down in Zanzibar.

Straight Talk: Peak months (Jul–Oct & late Jan–Mar) = higher prices and more vehicles. We counter with early starts and smart camp placement.

Serengeti FAQ

Can you guarantee a river crossing?

Never—crossings depend on herd pressure, weather and crocodiles. We stay near key sites, keep patient watches and avoid unsafe crowding.

Is green season worth it?

Yes—lush backdrops, fewer vehicles and sharp pricing. South/central deliver strong resident game; roads can be muddy but manageable with planning.

Balloon flights—who can join?

Typically 7–8+ years, weather permitting, weight/safety limits apply. We book the launch closest to your camp to save sleep.

How far are drives between regions?

Seronera ↔ West/North legs can be 3–6+ hrs. We design sequences that cut “windshield time” and use short flights only when they truly save hours.
